Activity Nine - Adding Machine With Cars

Description:  Applying self-help/ adaptive, cognitive, sensory, math and fine motor skills to identify by adding how many cars fall into the bin.

Materials:

  1. Two foam Cups

  2. Cars

  3. Car Stickers

  4. Two Paper towel rolls

  5. One Bin

Inquiry: Children are to apply basic addition into the activity. The cars go through the cups and the paper towel rolls, similar to a maze and then fall into a bin. A child puts in a car on one side and the other child puts one in through the other side. The amount of cars in the bin is the total.

Objectives/Outcomes: As a possible outcome, I encourage the children to communicate with each
other. Communication is important in activities because you question the children’s thinking. If the children communicate about math, they will have a better sense with numbers and what to do with those numbers.

Language:  “this is the funnest ever! I
love cars”. “vroom vroom, I
am going to win”.

Reflection:  Overall, after myself demonstrating how it works once, the children got the hang of it right away and were able to complete the task successfully. Myself and the children were engaging with each other through communicating. When it came to the math and counting part of the
activity, the children were so cheerful and proud that they understand numbers and how we use them.
