Activity Sixteen - Barnyard Farm

Description:  Children are to first listen to a story, then complete a few activities on the smartboard and then complete finding the animal and match it with its corresponding picture card.

Materials:

  1. Barnyard Dance Book

  2. Smartboard (helpkidzlearn matching farm animals activity)

  3. Farm Animals

  4. Bin filled with Rice

  5. PECS (picture exchange cards)

Inquiry: Children are to inquire the skills of using assistive technology and being able to match the picture cards with the animals.

Objectives/Outcomes: The learning objective of this activity is first to understand learning different aspects of the topic, prior to completing the activity. At the sensory bin table, the farm animals are in the bin. The outcome is to take the picture card off the felt board, then grab the animal out of the bin and once completed, to place animal back in bin and picture card back on the felt board (and repeat with new animals each time).

Language: Children are Non-Verbal. Minimal signs include; notice face of others, smiles and smiles when talked to, babble noises, points to colours, points to the picture exchange photos.

Reflection: Each step as done successfully (even with hand over hand assistance), by the children who participated. During the activity I would speak to the children and they understood my basic step words (e.g. Find the pig, take out pig, put pig back in bin). Also, I found the texture of the rice was of interest to them and the PECS system worked very well.
