        CHILD PARTICIPATION

BUILDS ON  RELATIONSHIP OF CHILD AND THEIR FAMILY

ENHANCES AND STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY BONDING

Family Story Booklet

The purpose of my special project is to include a parent to child activity to complete at home. In this activity, I plan to integrate a story book for each individual child about their goals, interests, cultural aspect, family traditions and such. This project is intended to cultivate a reciprocal relationship amongst myself and the family, as well as the family being more inclusive in the child’s school environment. This also enables parents to not only see an activity from home, but learning activities done in the class. I am looking forward into completing this special project because it is important for me to know and see that I do make a difference in a child’s development. I also hope that the parents understand how important it is for them to be in the children’s learning experiences. I am open to seeing the children use their imagination and creating a story booklet with their families.

Different components of the booklet was for the children to draw themselves and their families, colour, parents were also involved with helping the children write out their family tree and to draw out the child’s hand and each finger represents something interesting about their cultures. Very few parents had time to discuss with me how the activity went with their child at home. I understand that sometimes the child loses focus and would rather do something else, but the parents said they kept them on track and they bonded, laughed, and had a good time when completing the booklet. What I found that stood out was the children sharing the booklets with each other at group time. The kids found it so interesting and kept their minds focused on learning new things about different people. Overall, I think the implementation of my special project was decent. I wouldn’t say it was the strongest project implemented but it did send a message to the families about family involvement and how it is important to be in the child’s learning environment. Instead of the parents viewing their skills from home, they could actually see how they develop throughout the day in the classroom and free play. I think this project could improve in involving the parents to actually come in one day and share with other families and children more about their cultures. Having parent to child activities would be essential and beneficial in the classroom setting.
